The acronym DOP means enominazione di Origine Protetta (Protected Designation of Origin in English), and identifies the first level of protection in the European wine classification. It is often replaced by the equivalent Italian appellations: DOCG (Denominazione di OrigineControllata e Garantita - Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin), and DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata - Controlled Designation of Origin).
