Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG is a red wine made from Sangiovese grapes.
The first part of its name - Montecucco - indicates an area that extends east of Grosseto to the slopes of Mount Amiata, in Tuscany. In spite of the name (not to be confused with Mount Cucco that is located in Umbria), the territory is purely hilly and its vineyards extend between 120 and 500 meters above sea level. The soils are light and permeable, thanks to a stony and pebbly structure, and the climate is mild, typically Mediterranean, with a constant wind all year round.
The link of this territory with the grapes is strong since the time of the Etruscans, between the VI and the I century before Christ. There are many testimonies of winemaking equipment, such as the ancient “pithoi”, the traditional terracotta containers filled with the must coming from the crushing, or the documentary sources by medieval monasteries that have come to our day.
Today viticulture is a primary activity in the local agricultural economy, so much so that, even to underline its ancestral link with grapes, every autumn in Cinigiano takes place the traditional wine festival.
Profile
Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG has an intense ruby red color that, with aging, is enriched with garnet nuances. The aromas recall the berries that, in the Riserva version, are flanked by spicy notes of greater complexity and elegance. The taste is dry, tannic, persistent, quite fresh.
Food pairing
Traditional cuisine, reworking the flavors of a medieval cuisine, is the perfect match with Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG. In it we find mushroom soups, handmade pasta with various meat sauces, cured meats and pecorino cheese.
