Morellino di Scansano DOCG is a red wine, produced in Tuscany with Sangiovese grapes, locally also called Morellino.
The production area is located in the province of Grosseto, south of the denomination of Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG, and includes the town of Scansano, that gives its name. The territory is mainly hilly in the central part of the denomination, with vineyards between 30 and 560 meters above sea level, and dotted with sulfur-rich sources of water (such as those of nearby Saturnia). Soils are shallow but rich in substances useful for the vine. The climate is mild, typically Mediterranean, with a constant wind all year round and a dry period concentrated in the summer.
The link of this territory with the grapes has been strong since the time of the Etruscans, settling in this area between the VI and the first century before Christ. There are many testimonies of equipment suitable for harvesting and vinification, such as the ancient “pithoi”, the traditional terracotta containers filled with the must coming from the crushing, or the documentary sources produced by medieval monasteries that have survived until today .
Today viticulture is a primary activity in the local agricultural economy, so much so that, even to underline its ancestral link with grapes, every autumn in Scansano there is a traditional wine festival that involves the dozens of medieval cellars present in the town.
Profile
Morellino di Scansano DOCG has an intense ruby red color which, with aging, is enriched with garnet or orange nuances. The aroma is intense and vinous, it recalls cherry and wild berries and, in the Riserva version, spicy and woody notes. The taste is dry, tannic, persistent, quite fresh.
Food pairing
Morellino di Scansano DOCG goes well with all courses based on meat, in the most varied preparations. It gives the best with the typical dishes of the Maremma tradition, such as the pappardelle with wild boar sauce, the “pici” with the sauce, the stewed boar and the lamb “scottiglia”. Also good with aged cheeses.
