Have you ever noticed that when it comes to sparkling wines, it has always been assumed that they are white? In Italy there are two products that break this habit, i.e. they are both red and sparkling.
In Piedmont, in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, Brachetto d'Acqui DOCG is produced with Brachetto grapes, an aromatic variety with pleasant scents of rose, musk and red fruit. It is a recommended dessert wine that pairs very well with fruit pies.
Further south, in the Marche region, Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG is produced, with Vernaccia nera grapes. If you are lucky you can find this sparkling wine, whose production is very limited, both sweet and dry. In the sweet type, it is a meditation wine that goes well with the pastry; the sweet tooth will not be disappointed if they combine it with fruit pies or forest fruit tarts. In the dry type it is more versatile: it is good both for aperitifs and for accompaniment throughout the meal.
