Table wines
Table wines are the simplest wines on the market. Essentially they have two characteristics:
- they don't have any geographical indication (IGT, IGP) or designation of origin (DOCG, DOCG, DOP), therefore they are produced without respecting any production guidelines;
- they don't have any indication about the vine variety used for the production.
Mandatory information
The mandatory information contained in the label of a table wine is as follows:
- the typology of wine (for example Vino rosso, i.e. Red wine);
- the actual alcoholic strength in% of the volume (for example 12%);
- the country where it was produced (for example Prodotto in Italia, i.e. Produced in Italy);
- the identification of the bottler (its business name and location);
- the indication of the presence of allergens (for example Contiene solfiti, that is Contains sulphites);
- the packaging lot (usually a code);
- the volume of wine contained in the bottle (for example 75 cl).
If the wine was imported from abroad, on the label you also find:
- the name of the importer (its business name and location).
There is no precise order or a pre-set provision of this information, the important thing is that they are available in the same field of vision, i.e. they are easily readable without having to turn the bottle.
Optional information
We are sure that no one has ever found, at the supermarket or in the wine shop, a label like the one just above, containing only the minimum information required by the law. Fortunately, we face with labels that are richer in content both in writing and graphics.
Such optional information is always at the discretion of the wine maker who can insert words or graphic elements that best meet his commercial needs. Here are some:
- the trade name (generally a fancy name);
- the brand (as the trade name, also fancy);
- identification of the producer and / or the distributor (not to be confused with the bottler, that is mandatory);
- the European logo of the presence of allergens;
- the logo of the organic product certification (if the wine is organic);
- the logo or the wording of the biodynamic production method (if the wine is produced with bio-dynamic methodologies).
