Moscato Bianco (White Muscat) is one of the most cultivated native vines in Italy, widespread both in the northern and southern regions. It is part of the great Moscato family, together with Moscato Giallo, Moscato Rosa, Moscato Nero, Moscato di Alessandria (also called Zibibbo), Moscatello di Saracena, Moscato di Scanzo and Moscato di Terracina.
It was imported into Italy more than two thousand years ago by the Greeks during the colonization of Southern Italy, but its cultivation in the northern regions is more recent, which took place from 1300 onwards. In Piedmont it has found a fertile environment, both for the characteristics of the subsoil and for commercial choices made by the politicians of the epoch. In fact, the Moscato Bianco served to satisfy the enological needs of the most well-to-do classes, giving them a wine that distinguished itself from the others.
In Piedmont, where Moscato Bianco covers more than 20% of the area under vines, the vine is used for the production of sparkling wines, such as those belonging to the famous name Asti DOCG. In the rest of Italy, with much lower percentages, Moscato is used both in the production of still, sparkling, passito and liqueur wines.
Moscato Bianco, like all Moscato grapes, is characterized by its high aromatic potential. This characteristic allows in fact to preserve the scent of the fruit even after vinification, thus giving the wine intense and variegated hints of flowers and fruit. Thanks to the good acidity it is also suitable for sparkling wine.
Tasting
The color of the wine produced with white Moscato depends on the type of vinification and the area where it is grown. In the simplest wines, both still and sparkling, the predominant color is intense straw yellow; in passito or fortified wines the prevalent color is intense golden yellow, possibly with further amber reflections.
The scent is very characteristic and easily identifiable. It is always very intense and very complex. In young wines emerge floral notes of roses and citrus, notes of fresh fruit such as apricot, orange, peach and exotic fruit; the vegetal notes are practically imperceptible, while among the spicy ones emerges the honey. Further notes of dried figs, ripe fruit, candied fruit and jam emerge in the more aged or aged wines.
The taste is very intense and very pleasant, characterized by a pleasant acidity and a slight bitter note. The wine produced is moderately structured and with a notable persistence.
